The Tasmanian Approach: Building resilience through creativity

Welcome to The Tasmanian Approach by The Project Lab. Sharing the latest instalment of our bite-sized reports on how Tasmania and Tasmanian businesses are responding to today’s most pressing issues.

Today, we’re looking at how Tasmanians are building greater resilience through creativity.

The Facts:

  • Entering 2025, Tasmanians find themselves negotiating a series of severe disruptions in workplaces, climate, and geopolitics
  • Faced with so many global issues, Tasmanians are working together to build more resilient communities
  • Across many organisations and institutions, resilience has chiefly emerged from rethinking and redeploying resources in creative ways.

In the past twelve months, Tasmanian workers in more than seven sectors have undertaken industrial action in pursuit of better working conditions. It’s only one of many global trends of disruption currently impacting local Tasmanian communities.

In recent years, strikes have been increasingly common in China, Australia and the USA. A global increase in serious disease outbreaks in 2024 was reflected in a recent Tasmanian outbreak of whooping cough. And, of course, The escalating extreme events of climate change have consistently impacted the state’s communities.

Under the strain of so many challenges, Tasmanians are coming together to build more resilient communities. Often, by simply thinking differently about the world, systems, and resources around us.

To help better address violent behaviour toward healthcare workers, for example, hospitals have reimagined and extended their existing ‘Code Black’ system. The new ‘Code Grey’ empowers professionals to better address scenarios before they escalate to violence.

Similarly, Tasmania’s healthcare sector is rethinking long-standing challenges and turning them into sustainability opportunities. Our client, GreenMed® Australia, is pioneering a closed-loop recycling system to tackle the growing volume of clinical waste. By collecting and repurposing clean hospital sterilisation wrap, GreenMed is reducing landfill waste and creating reusable medical products. This initiative, which has already saved almost 15,000 kilograms of plastic from disposal, shows how innovative thinking can unlock hidden potential in existing resources—proving that resilience often begins with a shift in perspective.

The Tasmanian government is also addressing cost-of-living pressures by extending and augmenting the capacities of multiple charitable food networks to support more Tasmanians.

Sea Forest is one of Tasmania’s biggest international success stories of 2024, showcasing how our local approach to problem-solving can make a global impact. This innovative startup has reimagined how an Australian native seaweed can help dairy farmers reduce methane emissions. By adding the seaweed to livestock feed, methane emissions can be cut by up to 98%, offering groundbreaking solutions to reduce agriculture’s carbon footprint.

With so many pressures, it can often feel difficult to find the necessary resources to tackle big challenges. However, the Tasmanian Approach to resilience suggests we may already have the solutions within our communities. We just need to think differently.

Progress doesn’t always come from monumental change – it often begins with a small shift in perspective. The biggest challenge may simply be getting unstuck, breaking out of old thought patterns and uncovering new opportunities. At The Project Lab, our experienced facilitators help businesses and teams workshop ideas, challenge assumptions and find creative solutions to complex problems. Through structured discussions and workshops, we can collaboratively shape more progressive, adaptable and resilient businesses – without needing to change the world overnight.

For business leaders, resilience can come from the most unexpected places. By rethinking how existing resources and structures can be reimagined, leaders may discover unique solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems.
